Vehicles fleet

Each year the vehicle fleet is renewed, incorporating new generation units, with better and more sophisticated equipment in order to improve the quality of care to the patients assisted by SAMUR-Civil Protection.

Advanced Life Support Units (ALS)

These vehicles are specially designed to perform a comprehensive medical care to patients in extremely serious situation, both on scene and during transport to the hospital.

Each unit is crewed by experienced and well trained professionals to care for critically ill patients: A physician, a nurse and a EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) are the components of the team, and they are perfectly coordinated and  capable to solving any emergency.

All units are equipped with electronic medical devices, immobilization devices, communications, diagnostic and treatment equipment, all of the highest and latest technology.

These ALS units are distributed in all the operational stations of the City of Madrid.

Basic Life Support Units (BLS)

These are vehicles of assistance and transport  of patients under the supervision and coordination of the Chief Emergency Physician on duty. As well as the ALS are spread over the operational staions, covering the whole metropolitan area.

The crew of these units consists of two EMTs. The  BLS unit from Civil Protection are crewed by of 3 or 4 volunteer EMTs.

Psychiatric Support Units (PSU)

They are vehicles that are specially designed to transport psychiatric patients.

The Mobile CISEM is a complex project, led by SAMUR-Civil Protection, designed for all emergency services of the city of Madrid, and acquires its true dimension with the participation and collaboration of other municipal emergency services.

Rapid Intervention Vehicle  (RIV)

These vehicles are specially prepared for emergency health care in remote areas or in adverse weather conditions. They are all-terrain vehicles and are equipped with the technology and medical devices of an ALS ambulance, but with no transfer capability. They have the advantage of quick access to the place of demand and subsequently determine the resource type to use for the transfer if necessary.

They are equipped with communications equipment TETRA UHF and VHF for intercommunication with the different units and the 112 Dispatch Center. As standard, are equipped with TV monitor and GPS mapping system.

The RIVs are also vehicles used by Managers, Supervisors, Chief Emergency Physician on duty (Charly), and Chief Emergency Nurse on duty (Delta). These specific RIVs are equipped with the same materials of any ALS ambulance. Besides, these vehicles are equipped with:

  • Portable Ultrasound Scanner.
  • Intraosseous Vascular Access Device.
  • Test of rapid detection of HIV.
  • Analyzer of cardiac enzymes.
  • Fibrinolytic drugs.
  • Surgical equipment for emergency thoracotomy.
  • Self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Megaphone and Signposting Cones.
  • Vests and distinctive helmets for responsible staff in case of Mass casualty Incidents.

First Intervention Motorcycle  (Falcon Unit)

The "Falcon Unit" of SAMUR-Civil Protection is a motorcycle crewed by an EMT as a first responder. This units perform the initial care in places or events where the access for regular ambulances is difficult, or as quick advance unit before the arrival of ambulances.

This unit was created in June 2002 with 4 units. Nowadays there are 16 motorcycles. Eight of them do not require specific helmet or special clothing since the motorcycles have a bow and seatbelts. Recently , the fleet has been doubled eight new models with no bow or seatbelt, but much more manoeuvrable.

All units are equipped with everything needed for patient care in the first few minutes: semiautomatic defibrillator, first responder bag, oxygen , cervical collars, splints, pneumatic, latex gloves, etc.

URO vehicle for emergency support

A four-wheel drive HMTV (High Mobility Tactical Vehicle). It is all-terrain and has high mobility feature, that provides an extraordinary ability to move at high speeds for very steep areas and full load.

This is one of the tow vehicles of SAMUR-Civil Protection, providing support for operations in remote areas with difficult access such as forests, field slopes, etc.

With a 188 horsepower engine and independent wheel suspension, is capable of towing 3,500 kg. and loading 5,300 kg. It has also the ability to transport patients if necessary and, of course, has all the necessary medical equipment to care for a patient in any situation.

Vehicle for Medical Intervention Support (VMIS)

It's a truck with specifically designed bodywork to give the first logistic response to Multiple Victims Accidents, or interventions considered as special due to problems of accessibility, proper or enough lighting or aggressive environment.

This vehicle is equipped with medical supplies and material to support the acting medical teams, specially the Rapid Installation Tents to protect both the medical team and patients.

Mobile Pharmacy

It is a resource for operational logistics support. The mobile pharmacy is a vehicle driven by an EMT.

Its main task is the replacement of consumable material, electromedical and pharmacological elements and equipment of any kind. Thus, after an intervention, the units can be replenished without having to travel to the Central Pharmacy Store, reducing the non-operating times of the vehicles.

CRBN Unit

The CRBN intervention vehicle is intended to be used in emergency situations that may involve nuclear, radiological, bacteriological or chemical risk, as might happen in an industrial accident or terrorist attack.

The vehicle is fitted with equipment for the installation of a structure for decontamination (decontamination line), protective equipment, detection equipment (radiological and chemical) and supporting material for mass casualty incidents.

SAMUR-Civil Protection was the first pre-hospital emergency medical service in Spain with the means to deal with a CRBN risk emergency (the army did have such equipment). In 2003 began the development of a common procedure involving the Fire Department for coordinated attention to these events, which was updated and modified in 2004. Since then, joint periodic drills are performed in order to be prepared for an emergency of this nature. Since January 2007, there is a vehicle on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, crewed a specialist in this type of interventions  with training every six months. Two volunteer specialists complete the crew of this vehicle.

The CRBN Unit has the capacity to decontaminate 30 to 50 people per hour, enough to solve most of these accidents that may occur in our city and,  in case of major catastrophe, this unit ensure the attention of the first impact pending the arrival of additional means. Up to 3 vehicles of this type can moved.

Mobile CISEM

The Mobile CISEM is designed to, in the event of disaster or risk, be used both as operational coordination center and as a place to centralize information about the event, both for those responsible for decision-making as to the mass media.

Located in a large bus, with the latest technological innovations in the field of telecommunications, represents a new and pioneer concept in the world of emergency, as it was the first time that, in one single vehicle, it is combined a Crisis Room a Press Center and a Mobile Dispatch Operational Coordination Center.
