Madrid City Council has been committed to sustainability for years, and for this reason, in 2015 Madrid joined the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. In compliance with this international commitment, the Madrid City Council drew up the 2018-2020 Food Strategy that develops the following guidelines: food culture, right to food, promotion of the sustainable agri-food sector, public procurement, commerce, restoration and use of food waste. Facing the end of the period of validity of the aforementioned Strategy, the City Council is working on the drafting of a New Strategy 2021-2025, which consolidates the achievements and attempts to improve Madrid food system. The new strategy also responds to new challenges arisen from the COVID19 pandemic and need to be addressed without delay.
Within this new Strategy, the Madrid City Council, in collaboration with Madrid's public universities and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), announces the first edition of the “Awards for Academic and Research Works on Healthy and Sustainable Food Systems” in the city of Madrid. This award aims to identify and reward the best Doctoral Theses, End-of-Degree Projects and End-of-Master Projects in matters related to Madrid's Healthy and Sustainable Eating Strategy.
The Awards for Academic and Research Works on Healthy and Sustainable Food in the city of Madrid, 2021 edition, are endowed with € 10,000, which will be distributed as follows:
1. Doctoral theses: a first prize of € 3,000 and a second prize of € 2,000.
2. Final Master's and Final Degree Projects: a first prize of € 2,000 and three second prizes of € 1,000.
In addition, the awarded projects may be the subject of further development within the scope of the Madrid City Council and will be presented at the Milan Pact Monitoring Table, in which the different Municipal Government Areas are represented, in order to study alternative ways or technical support plans to integrate them into municipal activities.
The jury for the awards will be made up of experts from Madrid's universities, FAO and the Madrid City Council.
The bases have been published in the Official Gazette of the City Council and at https://diario.madrid.es/madridalimenta/premios-y-convocativas/ and the deadline for applications is October 7.
