Madrid City Council present at the commemoration of the 201st Anniversary of the National Festivities of the Central American Republics

On Thursday 15 September, the Ceremony to commemorate the 201st Anniversary of the National Festivities of the Central American Republics took place at the Galileo Cultural Centre, organised by the Embassies of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The act was presided by the Ambassador of El Salvador, Mr. Mauricio Peñate Guzmán, the Ambassador of Guatemala, Ms. Mónica Bolaños Pérez, and representatives of the embassies of Honduras and Nicaragua. Authorities of the Spanish Government, Diplomatic and Consular Corps accredited in Spain also attended. Madrid City Council was represented by the Director General of Cooperation and Global Citizenship, Mr. Cecilio Cerdán.

This was followed by the national anthems of the Central American Republics present, the Spanish national anthem and the Central American anthem that were performed by the Municipal Band of the Madrid City Council. Subsequently, Mr. Cecilio Cerdán underlined the work of the Madrid City Council's global citizenship program, which "has brought more than 7.7 million euros of the solidarity of the people of Madrid from the municipal budget to 30 cooperation projects in Central America". He ended his speech by praising the communities of the Central American countries that live in Madrid, and reiterating the role of the Madrid City Council as an ally for the prosperity of the peoples of Central America.

On behalf of the organisers, the ceremony concluded with the Ambassador of El Salvador, Mr. Mauricio Peñate Guzmán, highlighting the importance of development cooperation instruments.
