Madrid takes part in the 3rd Urban 20 Mayors’ Summit in Riyadh
The 3rd Urban 20 Mayors’ Summit (U20) took place last September 30 to October 2 in Riyadh, prior to the 15th G20 Leaders' Summit, which will be chaired by Saudi Arabia.
Due to the current pandemic, the U20 Mayors Summit was held online.
U20 began in 2018 under the leadership of the Mayors of Buenos Aires and Paris, and convened by the cities of the C40 Climate Leaders Group in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).
U20 aims to develop a common position and messages to inform and enrich the discussions of national leaders at the G20 summit through unique urban perspectives. The international Metropolis network has been also one of the U20 Advisory Partners since its first edition.
U20 urged the G20 Presidents and Heads of Government to rebuild in cooperation in all levels of government, civil society, private sector, research, think tanks and academics and work with them to:
- Invest in a fair and green COVID-19 recovery
- Safeguard our planet through national-local collaboration
- Draw new frontiers for development, accelerating the transition to a circular, carbon-free economy
- Empower people to offer a more just and inclusive future
Our city's participation and contribution has been fundamental in achieving its goals, namely the first sherpas meeting, the participation in Circular Taskforces, Carbon Neutral Economy, Inclusive Prosperous Communities and Nature-Based Urban Solutions, as well as the COVID-19 Task Force at the second sherpas meeting.
Representing Madrid City Council, the Deputy Director General for Internationalization, Mr. Juan Carlos de Castro, took part in the panel Taking measures to build accessible, inclusive smart cities. Advisor of the Delegated Area of Internationalization and Cooperation, Mr. Nicolas Gharbi also attended the event.
