Coordination and medical assistance in disasters
To ensure coordination between emergency services and the preparation of the professionals for disasters, there are more than 30 drills per year with Municipal Police, National Police, Firemen, Street-30, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), etc.
SAMUR - Civil Protection performs eight drills per year on trains and subway carriages, with the participation of the whole staff. Thus, the staff are trained for collective accidents (train crash, derailment, etc.), which differ considerably from individual patient care; and, at the same time, the first responders are instructed with resuscitation techniques and guidelines on how to help the Emergency Services to gain access to the carriages, when an accident happens.
In addition, every year during the Municipal Congress on Disasters, a macro-drill involving emergency services throughout Spain is performed.
This preparation enables an immediate and efficient response when a real disaster happens, like the terrorist attacks of March 11, 2004 in Madrid, in the regional railway; or the tragic airplane crash at Barajas on August 20, 2008.
SAMUR - Civil Protection keeps an operating Catastrophe Assistance System, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
